Dissociative Identity Disorder Treatment In NYC
Dissociative Identity Disorder
Dissociative Identity Disorder is a rare and difficult disorder to have. Previously referred to as multiple personalities, a person experiencing this disorder has severe states of disassociation.
When in this state a person will disconnect from their thoughts, mental processes, and sense of self. They will split their personalities into two or more identities and transition between them. These are called “alters”.
Dissociative Identity Disorder has roots in trauma. It is most often experienced by individuals who had severe and persistent childhood traumas. Individuals develop the disassociation as a coping mechanism to their environments.
Most traumas in this group of people occur very young- younger than six years old and persist for many years. If you or someone you know is struggling with Dissociative Identity Disorder, there are supports that can provide some relief.
While there is no way to “cure” this disorder, psychotherapy can provide relief. Please contact us today if you or someone you know would like support for this disorder.
